My Getaway Cabin Experience
For a long time I’ve wanted to celebrate my birthday in a cabin somewhere, cozy up in a warm bed while I past time just watching nature do it’s thing. 2022 was a year of many experiences for me, and I’m so happy that I had the opportunity to make another dream come true by staying in a tiny cabin in the Shenandoah Valley. I brought in the 33rd chapter of my life just how I envisioned – in peace, and I want to share more of my experience with you because you might want to cross this off your bucket list too!
I don’t know when exactly I was introduced to the Getaway tiny cabins, but I do remember seeing them everywhere on social media. When I first saw a post, I kept thinking I should do something like this especially since I’ve always wanted a cabin experience. At the time, I was trying to decide how I wanted to celebrate my birthday. Lately, I’ve been having this urge to just find time to relax, reflect, be at peace and reinvent my life. Once I started my research of the cabins, I happened to see a blogger I follow post her experience of the cabin. I knew it was a sign that this is exactly what I should do and needed to do. So Dom, Barks and I packed up our stuff and we headed to a Getaway cabin in Stanardsville, VA in the Shenandoah Valley.

My First Impression of the Tiny Cabin
So we had every intention to arrive at the cabin before night fall, but you know how things go — everything doesn’t work out the way you see it. Part of me wants to recommend that you arrive to the cabin before it gets dark, but the other part of me wants to tell you to arrive at night. The reason I’m on the fence about the two is because arriving at night it was hard to locate the road that takes you to the cabins (we got turned around and had to travel down this long dark dirt road lol), but our reaction when we pulled up to the cabin and saw the stars light up the sky well that was just priceless. So I’ll leave you to make your own decision of your arrival time. Just note that check in starts at 3 pm!
After basking in the happiness of seeing the stars, realizing I made the right decision and I was exactly where I needed to be, I took a look at the cabin window. I noticed there were pink balloons laying on the bed. Pink is one of my favorite colors so this instantly made me even more happy. When we walked in to the cabin my first thought was this is tiny, butttt it’s so cozy and cute! I knew what I was signing up for and it wasn’t this huge cabin with a fireplace and all the works. Instead it’s a tiny cabin, that I get to share with my loved ones and find peace. So know what you are signing up for before you choose to book with Getaway. If you want something small, quaint and quiet then this is your cabin.
What Does the Cabin Offer?
Although this is a tiny cabin, it came with a lot to offer! Here’s a list of the essentials that were available:
- AC/Heat
- Hot Water
- A small stove top – for this thing to be small it was packing some heat and cooked all of our food to perfection.
- Utensils
- Plates
- Pots and Pans
- Cutting Board
- Mini Fridge
- Toilet
- Toilet Paper
- Shower
- Towel and Washcloths (2)
- S’mores Kit (we didn’t get to try this out at the campfire area because the day we arrived it was soooo cold, but I thought this was a cute idea)
- Doggie Bowls, Treats, Doggie Bags, Towels (so great to have when bringing a pup with you)
- Salt & Pepper
What are the Pros & Cons?
PROS
- The biggest pro for me was the huge window next to the bed. I loved the cabin that we stayed in because I appreciated the view so much! It was such a great feeling waking up in the morning and seeing that view. It was magical and very special to me. By the way each cabin is given a name. You find out the name of your cabin the day of your scheduled arrival. The name of our cabin was Mary-Louise.
- I loved being surrounded by nature and trying to see what animals I might spot. I did spot a few cows all the way on the other side by a little water stream we noticed. Some birds I saw were a Blue Jay, Cardinal and Woodpeckers. There were actually lots of Woodpeckers there. In fact, I was going to put this as a con because they just so happened to peck at our cabin lol. We even had one that wouldn’t give up his pecking. When we knocked on the cabin in approach to get rid of him he just would peck even more. However, the reason I’m not putting this as a con is because it eventually stopped and plus I read that Woodpeckers symbolize new opportunities, creativity, optimism, courage, motivation, revival, self-actualization, balance, communication, protection, and discernment. So my response to this was peck away!
- I loved the space we did have to have deep conversations, read, and watch some of our favorite movies.
- They allow dogs! I’m always happy when I can bring Mr. Barks with us. I will say that he wasn’t a big fan of the cabin. I just think it was because it was something very new for him and he has extreme cases of anxiety sometimes. Every dog’s experience is different. We just made sure to show him lots of love while there.
- You are not the only person on the property. There’s lots of other cabins nearby, but you still have your privacy.
CONS
- As mentioned, the cabin is tiny. This wasn’t necessarily a con for me, but more so Dom’s con lol. So my advice to this is make sure this is the cabin layout you are looking for.
- There’s no freezer. Dom surprised me with some ice cream (we don’t eat this much anymore – on a healthy lifestyle journey), but unbeknownst to him the cabin didn’t have a freezer. There’s only a mini fridge.
- Although there’s a shower it’s very tiny and I could barely move around in it. Also, you’ll have to move quickly to wash up because the hot water only lasts for about 5-10 mins before it starts to get colder.
- There wasn’t a kitchen sponge; however, there were dish rags. This is so minor, but we’re not used to using dish rags to clean our dishes.
Recommendations
- Pack lightly since it is a small space.
- Stay at least two nights. At first, I thought I would only want to stay for a night in fear that we wouldn’t have much to do. So I came with the intention to create vision boards, nature watch, play games, watch movies, read, blog and more. In 2 nights all I was able to do was read, nature watch and watch movies. The time goes by sooo fast!
